Five Questions – Helena Harte – January 2023

Five Questions With Helena Harte
Update: Helena has been extraordinarily busy since I interviewed her. Her latest book, Sanctuary which came out in June 2024 is still in the Lesbian Romance top 100 on Amazon. I can’t wait to read the rest in the series.
Helena Harte kindly agreed to be interviewed, and I can totally relate to some of her answers, especially about the audiobook. There’s nothing quite as thrilling as hearing your own words spoken by a professional!
What is your favourite lesfic book and why?
That changes pretty regularly because of the quality of new books coming out all the time! My current favourite is Lines of Love by Brey Willows. I’m a huge romantic, and this book is all about love and how important it is to the world. And the final speech from Eris at the TED talk in the epilogue – wow, that just blows me away every time I read it.
From your novels who is your favourite character and why?And that changes with every book I write, though I still have a soft spot for my butch director, Rix, in Scripted Love. She’s such a believer in true love, like me!

You say you love writing romance. Why did you choose to write romance and are you concerned it has all been done before? It’s because I’m a massive romantic. I love the idea of soul mates, and happy ever after, and loving someone so deeply that it’s almost painful and too great a love to keep in your heart. I’m not concerned it’s all been done before. New stories come from new characters and their individual backgrounds, experiences, and personalities. No two people react identically to the same stimuli, thus no two people can ever have the same story. The possibilities are infinite.
If you could spend a day with another popular author, whom would you choose, and why?

I’d love to spend the day with Margaret Atwood. I think she’s an amazing writer, and I’d love to pick her brains for a day to help my writing craft.
What are you working on at the moment?I’m working on turning An Art to Love into an audiobook, and I’ve also just begun the chapter planning for my August release, Stunted Hearts. I heard a five-minute sample of my book a couple of weeks ago, and it was amazing to hear my characters and their story brought to life. I have no doubt that I’ll make bugger all money on it, but I think it’s really important to produce them for all the people who rely on audio stories for whatever reason. Accessibility for all is a must, and I’m committed to being part of that.
And a bonus question because I couldn’t resist it:
6. What drink best represents you and why?Hot chocolate – I’m smooth and sweet 🙂
That would be a cheap round! Good luck with the next book and the audiobook of course. Thanks again, Helena.
